There are days when I do not get Hideo Kojima. I always recognize his contributions to the history of gaming and his success as a developer, but he is not my brand of weird. His style comes from different stripes of pop culture than mine does. But there are times when I play (or watch) something he’s created, and it clicks. I get it. Never have I had quite so momentous a “click” than I did during this week’s State of Play event, when I watched Troy Baker’s Higgs in full Crow regalia electrocute a fool with a blistering guitar riff in the Death Stranding 2 trailer. I could feel the very fibers of my being light up, and if that’s what this game is going to look like, then call me Captain because I am on board.
The other big surprise at the State of Play event was Konami shadow-dropping a new, free-to-play Silent Hill game in the middle of the event. It seems the franchise is coming back in a big way, as the company also revealed a new look at Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake. The rest of the event was standard, as these things go, though I am looking forward to Stellar Blade, as it looks like exactly the kind of action game I gravitate towards.
The rest of the week feels like it’s been nothing but more staffing news. We had more layoffs — Eidos Montreal, Sega of America (though those happen in March), Nimble Giant, Airship Syndicate, Chief Rebel and Artificer. We also had two leaders of major studios step down: Douglas Morin of Devolver Digital and Joe and Pete Samuels of Supermassive Games. This parade of sad stories is starting to get to me, not gonna lie. The cancellation of an unannounced Deus Ex game was a particularly bad blow, considering that was announced on my birthday.
In personal news, I’m trying out Tekken 8 this weekend, and I might dip into the new Suicide Squad title. The glimpses I’ve seen on social media, the best anyone can seem to say about it is that it’s not as bad as they expected. There are a few other smaller titles I need to check out in the meantime, including Another Code: Recollection and Home Safety Hotline.
